Our Guard Llamas
For our female alpacas we chose a llama who had some experience as a mom. This gave our female that motherly instinct to watch out for her herd. Star High Spirited pictured to the left has been a wonderful mom to all of our females. Spirit as we call her for short is always with her herd, but yet she stays on the outskirts of the herd with an ever watchful eye. When she is concerned with something, even our dog Belle, she sounds the alarm and approaches the object of her curiosity. Studies done at Iowa State University cites average ranch use of one llama per pasture covering 250 to 300 sheep. Here at Red Barn Alpacas we are pleased with our choice of predator control. These animals integrate easily with alpacas and require no special husbandry other than that in which the alpacas receive. In addition, you even get the fleece from these animals at the end of the year to add variety and diversity to your fiber products. If you would like to know more about guard llamas please feel free to contact us and we would be happy to discuss the pros and cons (albeit few) of llamas as guardians. More Guard Girls!
